When we are talking about ecommerce software we can’t miss Shopify CMS. This CMS rightfully occupies the leading position in the software market for online stores.

If we turn to some statistics for help, we can easily verify this.

Let’s review Google Trends for the term “Shopify”.

Shopify can be described as a powerful and modern Content Management System that offers great functionality to its customers. Undoubtedly, a great interest among readers can be raised by the question of what is happening now, and which direction this system is currently moving.

Well, let’s look at some of popular technologies used by Shopify.

1)  AMP

It’s not a secret that a half of all traffic coming to websites, especially online stores is obtained through mobile devices. We won’t simply say that each Shopify store should be responsive (it’s a must-have feature). We want to mention that performance should be optimized especially for mobile devices. Google is promoting its AMP technology, so we can expect this feature to be integrated directly in Shopify CMS. According to private information from Shopify devs, they are working right now to make it happen.

2)   Oberlo App

Dropshipping is one of the best ways to start your business with minimal investments. Shopify understands requirements of current audience and provides best functionality for these needs. New web stores that are enhanced with this Oberlo app (https://www.oberlo.com) from the official Shopify app market can gain a significant competitive advantage early on.

3)   Shopping Marketing Experience

Mailbots, chatbots, recover cart pushers, sales pop-ups, coupons, countdown carts, etc. – all these features allow to convert traffic into sales. Website developers shouldn’t forget about this.

Of course, Shopify app market offers great variety of apps that can accommodate every need. However, we strongly recommend to have a good strategy based on hard data from your target market, so that you don’t install blindly all the awesome tools you see in the app market. They are many but many extensions inevitably slow a site down.

Find out what you want to achieve and then search for the tools that can help you get it in the most efficient way.

However, a strategy for development of a web page must begin with its general structure and feel, before diving into plugins and added functionality. That’s why you should choose your Shopify theme carefully from among many top quality offerings:

The theme has quite good mobile performance. It is compatible with the Oberlo app and integrated with a lot of interesting marketing features.

This theme is super fast. It has great variety of available options and perfect 5-star rating reviews from the customers. Mogo is integrated with a dedicated app which makes customization process must easier.

This Shopify product has clean design, different layouts. The theme has Megamenu, Instagram Shope, Ajax Filter and many other useful features.

The theme uses Shopify Sections that can provide you with the maximum flexibility in the process of the theme’s customization. Fastor uses hover image effect, autocomplete search, notification popup, and much more.

This web development product uses Ajax Layered Navigation. The feature is superior to tagging and allows customers to find out their best fit at a glance. The theme has product hover and quick view, lookbook, and Instagram gallery module.

When you are looking for the product that suits your project best, take some time for consideration and following the latest project management trends. After all, simply using the newest technologies will bring you no dividends without careful and meaningful application of their numerous possibilities.

When starting up their business online, many site owners fail to realise the importance of the page loading speed and how it affects the traffic.

The longer you are unable to attract visitors, the higher the chances that your website will get lost in the vastness of the internet for good.

Google uses many factors to determine the ranking of a website in its search results. Such metrics include the content of the site, the quality and the number of links toward it, the domain name, etc. Back in 2010, Google announced that Page Load Speed would also start to impact the overall ranking of Search Engine results.

Many and more web developers are now turning towards using AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) with PWA (Progressive Web App), to improve their rankings page load speeds on their way to Google’s first page.

One of the many successful companies, ‘Mynet’, took their website loading time very seriously and switched to AMP/PWA. After launching their PWA (Progressive Web App) that uses AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages), they saw around 4x decrease in page load time.

This drastic improvement led to some impressive numbers:

  • 25% more revenue per article page
  • 24% decrease in bounce rates
  • 34% increase in their average page views

There are multiple ways to increase page loading speed that every web developer should consider:

Front-End Code Improvements

A web developer can keep track of multiple flaws in the architecture of the website layers to improve page load times.

  • Minimise HTTP Requests

As per the tech giant ‘Yahoo’, more than 80% of a web page load time consists of HTTP requests, to download various resources like Images, CSS, Scripts etc.

To exclude such issues:

  • Use CSS instead of images, wherever possible.
  • Combine multiple stylesheets into a single file.
  • Always load the scripts at the bottom of the page and keep a close eye to reduce the number of scripts on a page.

  • Enable Compressions and Minification of Resources

Larger web pages are several megabytes in size, which makes them slow to load and process. To avoid such slowness, always compress your package files and minify the HTML/CSS files of that web page.

There are multiple tools available online to compress and minify the resources:

  • YUI Compressor to minify CSS and JS
  • GZIP to compress web page files before sending them toward the end users’ browsers

Tip: There are numerous website builders that conduct frontend code quality checks to improve page load speeds.

One of the most reliable builders is SiteBuilder. It is slightly ahead of its competitors in terms of page load speeds, uptime, and usability.

  • Optimise Images

The most integral aspect of a web page speed is the way it serves images. Websites often rely on high-quality images to attract potential users, but this strategy can backfire spectacularly when not applied properly.

There are multiple ways to optimise the images on a web page:

  • Use image-size reduction tool – bigger image size can be the most painful hindrance in loading a page fast. There are multiple online tools to reduce the actual image to a few Kbs, to make it web-perfect and light.
  • Use progressive image – recent web technology developments led to the progressive image rendering, which allows pages to load much faster, uncluttered by several pictures loading simultaneously; first, a low-quality image is displayed and then it is progressively rendered as the site loads, as opposed to conventional baseline JPEG loading. This step reduces the page load time by over 60%.

Tip: Among the many website builders, the most powerful builder available for proper image optimization and a progressive JPEG image display is Wix.

  • Use CDN

Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a network of servers located all over the world. They serve web pages and required content according to the geographic location of the customer, making websites accessible at the same speed anywhere.

This technology eliminates the page speed problems for users, who are a couple of continents away from the website’s original data centre.

CDN basically make static copies of your web page available on a server located near you, hence decreasing the load time for the website.

Tip: You may use some of most trusted CDN tools like CloudFlare or Cloud Delivery Platform – Akamai.

As the online business era is expanding day by day, there will be a constant increase in the urge to keep the web pages flashier, full of rich content and utilising the latest CSS tricks.

That’s why it is more important than ever to adopt the most efficient page building techniques to keep the page load times to a minimum and attract more online visitors.

Keep going faster, keep growing bigger.

Shopify VS Volusion 1

Shopify and Volusion are powerful e-commerce platforms that share some common features but also sport some major differences. In today’s world where everyone is looking for ways to increase their customers base, to boost sales and generate profit, virtual or online cloud stores like Shopify and Volusion have set the marker for great user-friendly platforms

They are cloud-based platforms for building and managing online stores through easy-to-use site building interface.

They both allow you to manage your products efficiently, keep stock of your inventory, open individual portfolio of customers, and have custom designed templates to create your web store with.

However, the similarities end here.

For example, Shopify has one of the best templates and a very intuitive, user-friendly interface that can help you get online in no time even without any previous experience in web design. Volusion is a platform with a point-and-click interface and much more streamlined creative process.

Shopify welcomes new users with handy tooltips and logically structured design interface. It provides hints and suggestions to help newbies get familiar with the entire e-commerce concept. Conversely, Volusion comes with a mindset that users are familiar with most things concerning setting up an e-commerce store and just wants to help you get the job done, without deviating much in explanations.

Volusion was built to accommodate 16 free themes, as well as almost 60 paid templates. But it cannot compare to Shopify’s 100 free themes and even more paid ones.

Moreover, the templates of these platforms are entirely different. Shopify provides some of the slickest design solutions among all website builders. Volusion themes are functional but nothing special. However, the Volusion themes are written in CSS and HTML, which makes them easier to edit. For comparison, Shopify uses Liquid, a relatively obscure programming language, and this makes editing the backend code harder.

Shopify has a much larger customer base, with over 375,000 customers compared to Volusion’s number of 40,000 customers. Furthermore, Shopify can integrate more than 1,500 third-party apps into its system, while Volusion has merely 60.

The prices of both are relatively moderate if you consider that Shopify charges $9 for its starter plan after a 14-day free trial. Other plans are approximately $29, $79 and $299 with unlimited bandwidth. Volusion charges $15 for starters and goes further by increasing it to $35, $75, and $135 respectively.

You might want to consider the fact that Shopify charges 2% for every transaction that is not done using Shopify’s payment system, while Volusion doesn’t charge a dime.

Customers support is an area Shopify have impressed a lot of people. 24/7 service for emails, chat and phone calls is quite convenient. Volusion is restricted to phone calls from UK, US, and AUS numbers, but its customer care is very knowledgeable.

Another difference you might consider is that Shopify is search engine optimized and has a good partnership with Google Analytics and AdWords. It also has a blog where fresh content is posted regularly to keep users updated on any new changes. Volusion doesn’t have such channel of communication.

In all, I think it is fair to say Shopify has the upper hand over Volusion, but the latter has its merits too.
